Trump’s VP Shortlist Shrinks to Three Top Contenders

Former President Donald Trump is gearing up to announce his running mate soon, just ahead of the Republican National Convention.

The campaign has brushed off the early chatter about who Trump might choose for his VP. According to the Washington Post, the top contenders are Sens. J.D. Vance (R-OH) and Marco Rubio (R-FL), and Gov. Doug Burgum (R-ND).

Vance, speaking on Meet the Press Sunday, mentioned he hasn’t “gotten the call” yet but promised to inform the media if and when it happens. “We’ll let the media know if I ever get that call,” the Ohio senator said. “But most importantly, we’re just trying to work to elect Donald Trump. Whoever his vice president is, he’s got a lot of good people he could choose from.”

Rubio, who appeared on CNN the same morning, also sidestepped speculation about Trump’s VP pick, deferring to Trump’s campaign. He added, “I’m willing to help in any way I can.”

Trump has rallies lined up this week, one in Miami, Florida on Tuesday, and another in Butler, Pennsylvania next weekend.

While everyone’s buzzing about Trump’s VP choice, the real distraction recently has been the chorus of calls for President Joe Biden to step down after his shaky debate performance last month. It left many questioning whether he’s up for another term.

With all eyes on Biden’s mental fitness, Trump might hold off on announcing his VP pick a bit longer.
