Shooter Targets Trump, Exchanges Fire with Secret Service

It looks like Donald Trump was the target of yet another assassination attempt, this time at his golf club in West Palm Beach, Florida. According to reports, shots were fired at Trump International Golf Club on Sunday, but thankfully, the former president is safe. His campaign quickly released a statement confirming his safety, but it doesn’t change the fact that this is yet another disturbing incident aimed at him.

CNN’s Brian Stelter took to social media, sharing that his colleagues had sources confirming the shots were likely meant for Trump. John Miller, a former law enforcement official now working as CNN’s Chief Law Enforcement Analyst, reported that the Secret Service had identified the direction of the gunfire and even returned shots at the suspected gunman. Unsurprisingly, the shooter managed to flee, but witnesses provided descriptions of both the suspect and the vehicle they used to escape. The police apparently stopped a car that fit the description shortly after.

The situation sounds like something out of a movie. Miller mentioned that officials recovered a backpack, a semi-automatic rifle, and even a GoPro camera near the scene of the shooting. The presence of a GoPro suggests that the shooter might have intended to record the entire attack, making this feel more like a twisted attempt at infamy than a random act of violence.

The Secret Service and Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office are now investigating the incident, with the Secret Service spokesman confirming that Trump is unharmed. The Martin County Sheriff’s Office also reported stopping a vehicle and apprehending a suspect believed to be linked to the shooting. The FBI quickly jumped into the fray, releasing a statement acknowledging that this looks like an attempted assassination of the former president.

This isn’t the first time Trump’s life has been put in danger. Back in July, he survived an attack during an outdoor campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. That time, the shooter managed to hit Trump in the right ear, but tragically, a rallygoer, 50-year-old fireman Corey Comperatore, was killed in the attack, and two others were injured. The gunman in that case was a 20-year-old named Thomas Matthew Crooks, who was taken down by Secret Service snipers before he could cause even more harm. After the July attack, there were major questions about how law enforcement failed to prevent such an incident in Butler. The fallout was significant, with Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle resigning amid the criticism. It looks like security around Trump is going to remain a serious issue, especially if these incidents keep happening. You’d think, after everything, law enforcement would be better prepared to handle this, but apparently, they still have a lot to figure out.
