The former president, clearly in campaign mode as he gears up for his 2024 run, didn’t hold back as he put the reporter and the network on blast.
As Trump addressed the crowd, he turned his attention to the reporter and asked pointedly, “Who are you with?” When the reporter identified himself as being with NBC, Trump seized the moment to launch into a scathing critique of the network’s coverage—or lack thereof—of significant national events.
“NBC? NBC fake news. Tell me, have you done a story on Afghanistan today?” Trump demanded. He then pressed further, “No, have you done that story, NBC? You know, the press never talks about Afghanistan. The most embarrassing moment in history. No, but have you done the story?”
Trump was clearly referring to the disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan, a topic that he insists the mainstream media, particularly networks like NBC, have been all too eager to sweep under the rug. He emphasized that the event was not just a blunder but “the most embarrassing moment in history,” and pointed out that it was the third anniversary of that debacle—a date he suggested NBC had conveniently overlooked in their reporting.
“Today is the third anniversary of Afghanistan. Do you know that? No, no, no, no. You know that,” Trump continued, with his trademark bluntness. “I just left Arlington National Cemetery. Do you know that? We buried people, we honored people in Arlington, and the press doesn’t even cover it because they’re fake news and they should be ashamed of themselves.”
Trump’s criticism wasn’t just about the past, but about what he sees as the media’s ongoing failure to prioritize stories that truly matter. “That’s the question you should be asking, not letting it be a trivia. I just want to thank you, everybody, very much. Don’t worry, you’ll never see that on television,” Trump said, his voice dripping with sarcasm as he wrapped up his comments.
After the event, Trump paid his respects at Section 60 of Arlington Cemetery, the final resting place for many of those who lost their lives in Afghanistan and Iraq. His visit served as a stark reminder of the sacrifices made by service members—sacrifices that Trump believes the media too often ignores in favor of their own narrative.
